Volunteer driving can involve transporting clients, community members, children, seniors or supplies. Because the role involves operating a vehicle, some Ontario organizations may include a driving-record check in their screening process. The exact requirement is set by the organization, so volunteers should confirm what document is needed before ordering anything.
Why might a volunteer organization ask for a driving record?
A driving record can provide documented information about a driver’s licence and driving history. Ontario notes that driver records may be needed for employment and other purposes, and different records contain different information. A volunteer organization can similarly establish its own screening requirements for a driving role.
Do not assume that every volunteer position requires a driver abstract. Ask the coordinator or organization whether a record is required and, if so, which exact Ontario record they will accept.
What does the common 3-year driver record contain?
Ontario’s 3-year driver record includes driver identification details, the demerit-point total, active fine suspensions, and specified Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code convictions, suspensions and reinstatements for the past three years. It does not include the driver’s residential address.

Should a volunteer order a certified or uncertified record?
Ontario offers certified and uncertified versions of several driving records. The province states that uncertified records meet most people’s needs, while certified records are typically required for legal reasons. That does not mean an uncertified copy will satisfy every volunteer organization.

What if the organization says it needs a licence history?
A driver’s licence history is not the same as the common 3-year driver record. Ontario says licence history contains information such as licence replacements, renewals, class changes and, depending on ordering method, address history. It does not include the demerit-point total or conviction and suspension information found on the 3-year record.
If the request is unclear, get the document name in writing before ordering. This simple step can prevent purchasing the wrong record.
Preparing for a volunteer driving role
Ask the organization about its complete driver-screening requirements. Depending on the role, it may have requirements beyond a driving record, such as proof of insurance or other internal documentation. Those requirements are organization-specific.
