Ontario offers several types of driving records, and two names that can easily be confused are the regular Driver Abstract and the CVOR Driver Abstract. They are not the same document.
What is a regular Ontario Driver Abstract?
A common Ontario 3-year driver record summarizes recent information associated with an individual’s driver’s licence. It includes identification details, demerit point totals, and certain convictions, suspensions and reinstatements from the previous three years.
What is a CVOR Driver Abstract?
A Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR) Driver Abstract focuses on commercial-driving safety performance. Ontario states that it provides a five-year record of collisions, safety-related offences, convictions and inspections relating to a driver while operating in Ontario. It also shows the driver’s licence status and medical due date.
Which one do I need?
If an employer simply asks for a 3-year Ontario driving record, they may be referring to the regular Driver Abstract. If a trucking company, commercial carrier, or another organization specifically asks for a CVOR Driver Abstract, you should not substitute the regular record without confirming that it will be accepted.
CVOR carrier abstracts are different again
Ontario also offers carrier-level CVOR records. Level 1 is a one-page public summary of a carrier’s two-year record. Level 2 includes more detailed event information and is available only to the carrier. These should not be confused with the CVOR Driver Abstract for an individual driver.
Confirm before ordering
The simplest rule is to ask the requesting organization for the exact name of the record it requires. This can prevent you from ordering a document that does not satisfy its screening or compliance requirements.
