If you have recently moved or changed your name, it is worth checking that your Ontario driver information is current before requesting a driving record. A mismatch can create unnecessary confusion when a record is being used for employment, insurance, licensing or another administrative purpose.
Update your driver information first
Ontario requires drivers to update their address within six days of moving. Name and other personal-information changes may require an in-person ServiceOntario visit and supporting documents. Keeping your licence information current helps ensure that records requested afterward reflect the information held on file.
Does a 3-year driver record show your address?
No. Ontario’s common 3-year driver record includes driver identification details, licence status, demerit-point total and certain convictions, suspensions and reinstatements from the previous three years, but it does not include the driver’s residential address.
If address history is the reason you need a record, a driver’s licence history may be more appropriate. Ontario says this record can include past and current residential addresses when ordered online or by mail. An immediately issued in-person licence history does not include that address information.
What if you changed your name?
Update the name on your driver’s licence before relying on a newly requested record for an employer, insurer or other organization. The name shown in the driver-identification section of a driving record is tied to the name appearing on the licence.
Confirm which record the requester needs
A 3-year driver record and a driver’s licence history answer different questions. The 3-year record focuses more on recent driving activity and licence status, while the licence history focuses on the history of the licence itself, including replacements, renewals and class changes.
