The phrases driver abstract and vehicle abstract sound similar, but in Ontario they refer to records about different things. Confusing them can leave you with a document that does not answer the employer’s, insurer’s or other requester’s question.
A driver record is about the driver and licence
Ontario describes a driver record, commonly called a driver abstract, as a government-issued document containing information about a driver and their driver’s licence. The common 3-year driver record includes identification and licence details, the demerit-point total, and certain convictions, suspensions and reinstatements from the previous three years.

A vehicle record is about a registered vehicle
A vehicle record, sometimes also called a vehicle abstract, is different. Depending on the type ordered, Ontario says it may contain details such as a vehicle description, plate information, registration dates and vehicle status.
Importantly, Ontario states that vehicle records do not contain current odometer readings, collision information, driver’s licence numbers, owner names or personal address information.
Which one should you request?
If someone wants information about your driving history or driver’s licence, they may be asking for a driver record. If the request concerns registration or information about a particular vehicle, a vehicle record may be the relevant product.
Do not rely on the word “abstract” alone. Ask the requester for the exact document name, the period required and whether a certified version is necessary.
What about a CVOR Driver Abstract?
Commercial driving adds another record type. A CVOR Driver Abstract is a five-year record related to commercial-driver safety performance in Ontario. It is not interchangeable with either the standard 3-year driver record or a vehicle record.
